About Us

—About Us—

The original building was build in 1841. It was constructed of bricks formed and fired on site. Before 1861 it was the home of Dr. Jacob Chambers, then the Civil War broke out between the North and the South and the home was taken over by the officers of the Union troops stationed at Fort Mulligan which occupied Petersburg.

In 1881 John & Mary Cunningham converted the home into the Cunningham Hotel.

Around 1900 Mr. & Mrs. John Taylor took over and decided to add more rooms to the hotel and change the name to the Taylor House or the Oriental.

In 1904 a Dr. Roy Husk who was staying at the Inn took some paint from a shed in the back and painter the name (The Hermitage) on the old sign and the name has continued for over 120 years.

The Hermitage Inn has been owner and operated by many local families over the past 100 years and today the Kaposy Family own the property.

The Hermitage 1841 Restaurant is now operated and managed by Branch Mountain Management, Inc which operates multiple restaurants including our sister restaurant Mullin’s 1847 Restaurant in Moorefield. The Keplinger Family hope you enjoy your time with us.
